INSTRUCTORS

The Monterey Junior Lifeguard Program is taught by professional State Park Lifeguards. The Lifeguards have extensive experience and rigorous training in surf and ocean rescue, beach safety, first aid, and CPR. The instructors also have teaching and interpretation experience with children and other diverse groups. Several guest lecturers (local Monterey Bay marine experts) are included in the JG curriculum so that they may share their knowledge and experiences with the Junior Lifeguards. Safety and education while having fun are our primary objectives.

There will be a minimum of six paid State Park Lifeguard instructors and several volunteer assistants with the Junior Lifeguards at all times during the program. This supervision level exceeds the California wide standard ratio of 20 students to 1 paid Lifeguard instructor, during the absolute lowest level of supervision.

ASSISTANTS

The Junior Lifeguard Assistant Program is a volunteer job development program for youths ages 16 - 18. The program provides veteran Junior Lifeguards with the skills and experience needed for future employment as a professional Lifeguard.

Volunteer Assistants work under the close supervision of the Junior Lifeguard instructor staff to help safeguard the Junior Lifeguard Program area during all aquatic and beach activities. Each day the Assistants receive training and instruction in aquatic safety, Lifeguard skills, first aid and CPR, and their progress is measured throughout the program.

The Junior Lifeguard Assistant Program has been used to identify potential Lifeguard candidates and has produced many of the finest Lifeguards in the state. For more information about the Assistant Program, please call
